On Long-Nosed Poets and the Lies That Save Us<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early 2022, Pooya began composing poetry, influenced by his personal experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wrote poems that, without his realizing it at first, broke away from the traditional forms of Persian poetry. For a long time, he had no intention of publishing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He considers his poetic voice shaped by the influences of Omar Khayyam, Sohrab Sepehri, and Shel Silverstein. A curated collection of his poems, titled “Please Be a Long-Nosed Poet,” is currently in the pre-publication stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The title refers to one of the key and longer poems in the collection, called “The Wooden Puppet.” In this piece, the poet portrays poetry as a grand lie one that, the more masterfully you tell it, the longer your nose (like Pinocchio\u2019s) grows. And yet, this lie is seen as something vital to being human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following poem is one of the works from this collection. The hope is that the full volume will be published in the near future.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is life?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The piles of dust gathered together<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And spoke to each other,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What is life?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The body found itself in an accident,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then when the field of thought was lost,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the midst of this confusion, human emerged,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And again asked, “What is life?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One question became the beginning of the field of thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human became human,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pile of dust scattered in the wind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pile of dust settled,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rain fell,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earth became wet,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human became human,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And again asked, “What is life?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh delicate heart,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh frail body,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where are those wings and feathers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where is your power?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piles of humanity gathered together,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And asked each other,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What is life?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The society found itself in an accident,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then when the field of thought of each individual was lost,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the midst of this confusion, the community emerged,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And again asked, “What is life?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One question became the beginning of the field of politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The society became society,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A revolution occurred,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes a rebellion boiled in the heart of a hug,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Death danced,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Birth was destroyed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The society became society,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh government,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh nation,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your power?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are your wings and feathers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piles of thoughts gathered together,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And asked each other,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What is life?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I” found itself in an accident,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then when the field of norms was lost,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the midst of this confusion, “I” emerged,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And again asked, “What is life?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One question became the beginning of the field of philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I” became “I”,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I” crawled in its own solitude,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gave birth to a child,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The child took its place at the center of the world,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Called itself “self”,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the world “I”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I became arrogant with position and status,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gave birth to another childhood in its solitude,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Named it “knowledge”,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowledge was a jealous child,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tore “I” into pieces and placed each piece in a corner of the mind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating a different parent for each piece,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So that its murder would not be revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Self” fell from the center of the world and died,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I” became “I”,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pile of dust scattered in the wind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pile of dust settled,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rain fell,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earth became wet,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life became death,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meaning became meaningless,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dust became dust,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And never again asked,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
